Welcome to Mahlstedt Ranch!
Our Family
Our modest eastern Montana ranch, nestled on the foothills of the divide between the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers, was homesteaded in 1912 by John and Mary Mahlstedt with their nine children. The ranch has always been a working family ranch. Their son, George L., & his wife, Hannah, raised their children (Little Johnny, Patricia, and George A.) working day to day alongside them. They carried the ranch through the Depression years and added land during the subsequent decades. Their son, George A., joined the operation following his graduation from Montana College in 1965. George A. and Jeanie Mahlstedt continued the tradition of raising their two daughters (Tana & Trista) to work side by side as a family. George A. and Jeanie still oversee the ranch daily operations with the help of daughter, Tana & Ross Canen, and Tienna & Alexis. The Canen’s three daughters (Tienna, Alexis, & Corinne) are the 5th generation to work on the ranch.
We’ve raised registered Quarter Horses for nearly 60 years along with Salers/Angus cattle and feed grains. Our horses have color, class, and cow with an emphasis on athleticism & speed & good dispositions. We are proud to be an AQHA Ranching Heritage breeder and a selected breeder in the AQHA breeder referral program. Here in eastern Montana, we have dry summers and bitter, cold winters. Our horses have to be strong (just like the people) to survive. Our primary goal is to raise horses that we can use on the ranch, but our horses are all over the continent doing all kinds of wonderful things! We are happy to tell you the good and not-so-good about each horse. We don’t want you to have surprises with our horses. It’s better if you don’t buy than to not like one of our horses. We want to load your next best friend in your trailer!
The primary goal of our ranch and remuda is to serve our Lord in taking care of His creation and producing horses and cattle which glorify Him. We understand that we are blessed as few others in the world in living and working together as a family in a beautiful, yet remote part of the world. It is a joy and a responsibility to raise good using ranch horses for our family use and for many other people to use and enjoy.
We are located 45 NW of Glendive Montana or 21 miles E of Circle MT. We would love to have you visit our operation anytime!
